Mucho Gusto

Here in Peru, ‘mucho gusto’ is a polite response when being introduced to someone, meaning “I’m pleased” with the ‘to meet you’ implied. It’s like a pause moment before you engage in further conversation. I was thinking about this expression as an attitude to life. What if our first response to all we encounter is, “Hello, welcome, I’m pleased”, instead of wariness, distrust or rejection? By saying “mucho gusto”, even if we aren’t so pleased, it gives us a moment to recognize there might be something valuable in the situation, an opportunity to learn and grow. I’m going to try it.
